Let’s Set September 2024 Goals!

My writer productivity skyrockets when I set monthly writer goals, and it’s time to share my September goals. At the beginning of each week I break them down into daily tasks that fit my current schedule. Do you know how great it is to finish projects? Of course you do! For me, setting monthly goals makes it all possible.

Every month I share how I did the previous month as well as what my new goals are. Let’s get to it!

How Did I Do? Jill’s August Goals

  • Writing
  • Draft most of a trade-length book. CHECK!
  • Health
  • Exercise 5 days/week with more difficult sessions 3 of the days. CHECK!
  • Eat at least 5 fruits and/or vegetables every weekday. CHECK!
  • Personal
  • Check out a local farmer’s market. NO CHECK.
  • Go to a Toledo Mudhens game. CHECK!

Besides spending time with family (and a vacation up in Traverse City, Michigan), most of August was a drag. I hate to say that, but it’s true. I wrote around 60,00o words in three weeks. I did not want to write. I wanted to putter and get caught up with business tasks. I wanted to lay out in the sun and read books. I wanted to go shopping, have a coffee date–anything except cramming in so much writing. (I do love the book, though, so there’s that.)

My time is limited for the rest of 2024, and this was the only window for me to finish the draft of this particular book. As of this afternoon, the draft will be done. *ahhhh*

The health goals looked good, but I’ve been gaining weight since March. It’s time to get real about my habits. Exercising for me has never kept weight off. I’m eating too much. Period. So…I’m working on it.

On the personal front, I’m not upset about not making it to the farmers market. We only had one Saturday in all of August with no plans, and the farmers market is on Saturday mornings. Oh well!

Jill’s September Goals

  • Writing
  • Plot story, write long synopsis and first chapter of new book
  • Plot more of an uncontracted book
  • Prep for an author’s night at Bene Italiano in Toledo, Ohio! (It’s on September 17, from 5pm-8pm. I’ll be joined by Denise Hunter, Janine Rosche, and Carrie Walker. See the graphic below for all the details and to register!)
  • Health
  • Exercise 5 days/week with more difficult sessions 3 of the days.
  • Eat at least 5 fruits and/or vegetables every weekday.
  • Eat fewer carbs/lower calories on weekdays.
  • Personal
  • Check out a local farmer’s market.
  • Get out the fall decorations!

I’m feeling better about life now that the draft of the book is finished. I need to turn right around and work on another–and another–but that’s a good problem to have!

I’d love to hear how your August went. What did you do? What are your September 2024 goals?

Enjoy your day!

  1. I didn’t meet all my August goals. Heck, I only fully met one of them, the rewrite of the contemporary novel. But that’s okay. I’m learning to cut myself some slack.
    My goals for September are:
Writing — Plot work for third contemporary Christmas novel.
More work on the Irish-in-steerage novel.
Scan in historic photos for a possible nonfiction local history book.
House — Keep cleaning. We got rid of a bunch of stuff in August, but we still have a way to go.
We’re pack rats, not hoarders. Hoarders are dirty and they have more pets. But we definitely need to do a home edit. The nice thing is this time around, my husband is helping me. Even he realizes that some things don’t need to be kept.
Health — Could use some improvement. Eating better, but didn’t exercise AT ALL in August.
Jill, thanks for keeping us in line.

    1. I’m cutting myself some slack, too, Kathy. I’m impressed you finished the rewrite!

You have a good plan, and if SOME of it gets done, you’re winning!
      Keep up the good work!
