Read an Excerpt

“Decision time.” Brody Hudson carried the upside-down Stetson to his cousin, Hayden, sitting on the sectional in their late grandparents’ living room in Fairwood, Wyoming. After Hayden dropped a folded piece of paper into their grandfather’s hat, Brody sidestepped around the square coffee table and presented the hat to each of his siblings and cousins for their votes. When he set it on the coffee table, six sets of eyes were glued to it. “Who’s going to tally the votes?”

His steady voice betrayed neither excitement nor fear. Ever since their grandfather died a month ago, Brody had been living for a dream. Roy Hudson had left Hudson Ranch Incorporated to the six of them. Their grandfather’s remaining assets were in a trust to be divided equally between his two sons—their fathers, Bill and Tony Hudson—and six grandchildren. The papers in the hat would reveal their futures.

Would the third generation of Hudsons unite to run the ranch? Or would they resume their lives, sell the property and enjoy the financial windfall their grandfather had bequeathed them?

Brody wanted them to take over the ranch so badly he could taste it. But it wasn’t only his decision to make. He glanced at his younger brother, thirty-year-old Cooper, and their baby sister, Meena—technically no longer a baby at twenty-seven. Cooper’s resolute expression gave nothing away. Brody was certain Meena wanted to take over the ranch since she’d started renovating the cabins shortly after the funeral. He studied his cousins, Hayden, Seth and Kylie. Hayden’s left hand clenched and unclenched, a sure sign of his nerves. Seth had the clear expression of a man willing to take a chance. The youngest of their crew, Kylie, was biting the corner of her lower lip. Meena scooched forward.

“I’ll do it.” With an eager gleam in her eyes, she placed the hat next to her and carefully retrieved each paper, unfolding and smoothing one on top of the other. Her shimmery pink nail polish highlighted the slowness of her actions. Brody wanted to yell at her to pick up the pace. His hair would be gray by the time she tallied the results.

Suspense built, burning through his core. He tried to distract himself by taking in the room, cozy as could be for the late October evening. Their grandparents’ two-story house had five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a large sunroom and multiple areas for relaxing. The family had been calling it the lodge for as long as he could remember.

A fire blazed in the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace at the center of the spacious living room. Behind the fireplace and to the right, a dining room held a long table seating twenty. An eat-in kitchen was in the rear of the house. And to the left was a den, where the six of them had spent many summer nights playing board games, bickering and laughing. They’d spent every summer together on the ranch until they’d grown up and gotten full-time jobs.

Although none of them had grown up in Wyoming, the land was in their blood. Please, God, let the verdict be yes.
