Let’s Set Goals {August 2021}

My writer productivity skyrockets when I set monthly goals. At the beginning of each week I break them down into daily tasks that will work within my current schedule. Do you know how great it is to finish projects? Of course you do! For me, setting monthly goals makes it all possible.

Every month I share how I did the previous month as well as my new goals. Let’s get to it!

How did I do? Jill’s July Goals

  • Writing
  • Revise and polish Wyoming Ranchers book 3 CHECK!
  • Health
  • Exercise 5 days/week CHECK!
  • Continue eating more unprocessed food CHECK!
  • Track calories on weekdays NO CHECK.
  • Drink minimum of 72 ounces of water every day CHECK!
  • Other
  • Continue reading fiction for a minimum of 20 minutes every weekday CHECK!

I know these are light goals, but I have to tell you I still struggled to get them completed! What can I say? We’ve been busy!

About a week into the month, I stopped tracking calories altogether. Once again I found it restrictive and annoying. Does tracking calories work? For me, yes. But was it worth being irritated daily? Not this July.

Since we’ve embraced MANY rewarding opportunities to see friends and family this summer, I’m treating myself as kindly as possible, and that means no calorie tracking until/if I can commit to it without feeling annoyed.

  • Revise and polish the sample chapters and synopsis of Wyoming Ranchers book 4
  • Health
  • Exercise 5 days/week
  • Continue eating more unprocessed food
  • Drink minimum of 72 ounces of water every day
  • Other
  • Continue reading fiction for a minimum of 20 minutes every weekday
  • Enjoy summer as much as possible before fall arrives!

A small part of me longs for September. It’s the month I’m most energized about my work. It always feels like a fresh beginning, and I set big goals for the final quarter of the year. Right now I’m still in summer mode (as I should be!), where everything feels a bit loosey-goosey. I guess it wouldn’t be August if I didn’t feel that way!

  1. Jill, if you’ve already got reasonably good eating habits, you don’t need to track calories. You will instinctively know what’s good for you at what time. It’s all about balance. In fact, that’s ALL it’s about.
    I’m looking forward to September too, except that I live in New England and September is the gateway to the inevitable.
    I had an okay July. Didn’t get as far as I wanted to on my WIP, but got a lot done. I am struggling now with the Last Three Chapters, but finding them harder to produce than the first 20 together. I don’t know if it’s because it’s August, I didn’t do enough research, I’m burned out or I didn’t think things through. Anyway, my goal for August is to finish those three chapters.
    I got derailed last week with two things: the proofs for my nonfiction history book and the edit letter for my next fiction book. In the same week. I rammed my way through, and did not get up from my computer chair until they were done. In the same week.
    I’m doing okay on the health goals, or at least better than I did over the Covid Winter. Eating salads for lunch and walking again.
    No progress on cleaning the house, but we’re used to that now, right?
    My goal for August is to finish my WIP. I have a second nonfiction history book in the works, War Monuments of New Hampshire: The Stories Behind the Stones, and I’d like to finish the Vietnam and Korea sections. My health goals are to walk five days a week and continue with the salads and lighter meals. Nothing on the house, do not go there.
